How Ford Performance Innovations Make Their Way Into Borgman Ford's Selection

Whether you follow motorsports or not, Borgman always finds it interesting how breakthroughs in the performance garage eventually find their way into the vehicles on our lot in Grand Rapids. Several Ford innovations like the ever-popular EcoBoost engine started life this way, and now Ford is showing off some other cool tech they're working on for race cars that will eventually improve their entire lineup. Ford Performance Racing Technology Speeds Development of New Vehicles, Cuts Engineering Costs In this article, we'll take a quick tour of a Ford Performance facility, explain some of the technology they're using there, and show how it benefits performance and 'civilian' vehicles alike. Inventions like their new simulator are helping them save time and money on these engineering budgets. This makes Ford a force to be reckoned with on the track, and deliver better vehicles to you at affordable prices. Read all about it in the excerpt below: All-new research and development technology that helps make Ford Performance racecars faster also is helping Ford speed up development of its consumer vehicle lineup and improving the company's operational fitness. Breakthroughs including a daily driving vehicle simulator, 3D race environment and other advancements are helping Ford improve product development fitness by reducing the number of physical prototypes. In its latest move, Ford is working to speed up vehicle development and reduce costs through a new production vehicle dynamic simulator in a 33,000-square-foot facility in the heart of NASCAR country in North Carolina. The initial purpose of the facility - up and running since 2014 - was to develop and test racecars virtually through an immersive simulator. But the tools have become so good so fast that Ford is now using the technology for its production vehicles. "The mission of Ford Performance is to transfer innovations from racetracks to the driveways of new Ford vehicle owners," said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance. "The tech center and this new driving simulator are two of the most important steps we have taken to help our mainstream engineering partners make sure the next Edge or F-150 is great to drive - even if you don't check the performance model box." The New Ford Edge All-Wheel Drive System Uses AI to Keep Up With West Michigan Weather

We've all experienced it: you're driving along a West Michigan highway on a beautiful sunny day, and out of nowhere it starts pouring rain. Maybe you're in Grand Rapids traffic around late fall or early spring and the temperature suddenly dips below freezing. Either way, it makes the advanced new AI-controlled All-Wheel Drive system in the 2019 Ford Edge that much more appealing to Michiganders. Imagine being in one of the two scenarios above and not needing to do anything but stay focused on the road. The computer keeps an eye on input from all over the vehicle and is able to figure out what kind of driving condition you're in. It then adjusts the vehicle's systems accordingly - switching from front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive automatically. This article from the Official Ford Media Center explains more about how the system works. Take a look below for some excerpts: New Ford Edge, Edge ST Use Artificial Intelligence To Help Improve Traction, Reduce Fuel Usage The new 2019 Ford Edge with available all-wheel drive is smart enough to detect various driving conditions and automatically shift between two-wheel and all-wheel drive. The feature provides all-wheel-drive traction when it is needed, and helps reduce fuel consumption when it’s not. The system is called all-wheel-drive disconnect, a first-for-Ford technology that uses a form of artificial intelligence that can calculate quicker than the human brain. Based on information received from dozens of high-tech sensors, the new Edge can determine in a fraction of a second whether all-wheel drive is needed. “The concept is pretty simple, it was the execution that was the challenge,” said Scott Beiring, Ford driveline applications supervisor. “Shifting between two- and all-wheel drive needs to be fast and seamless enough that the customer doesn’t know it is happening.”The system uses an all-new dedicated electronic brain that receives inputs from dozens of sensors throughout the vehicle. It interacts with the traction control system to detect wheel slip, receiving inputs from the anti-lock brakes to learn if that system is active. It even detects if the windshield wipers are on, whether the Edge is towing a trailer, and the outside temperature. You can read more about how this system works on Media.Ford.com. Ford Announces Special "Heritage" Packages for the Ford GT for 50th Anniversary of Le Mans Victories

Borgman Ford Congratulates Ford on the 50th Anniversary of Their Victory at Le Mans Borgman Ford in Grand Rapids is cheering alongside Ford this week as they celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their victory at Le Mans. To pay homage to their iconic Ford GT entered in the race, Ford has announced a special "Heritage Edition" of their modern GT. The most notable throwback to the legendary car is the blue and orange paint scheme - a color combo that has become one of the most recognizable in motor sports since Ford's 1968 victory. The Heritage Edition Ford GT also boasts carbon fiber accents and exclusive interior colors and materials. The special edition package will be produced in 2019 and 2020, with each edition bearing subtle graphics and embossings of #9 and #6, respectively. These are a nod to the two Ford GTs that ran in Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. There's much, much more to appreciate about Ford's super car though - read more below in these excerpts from the Official Ford Media Center: New 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition Honors Most Famous Paint Scheme In Motorsports The new 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition honors the legendary American Gulf Oil-sponsored Ford GT40 by featuring the most famous paint scheme in motorsports – plus a set of additional exclusive touches. “Many view the Gulf Oil paint scheme as the most famous in motorsports,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, global operations. “The 1968 GT40 quickly became a global sensation after beating its European competitors on the track four times in a row, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of its win, we’re paying fresh tribute to the original with a new heritage limited edition.” Known among racing enthusiasts as chassis No. 1075, the 1968 GT was one of just a few individual cars to achieve repeat victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For the first time, an optional package provides exposed carbon fiber accents for both the interior and exterior of the Ford GT Heritage Edition. For 2019, the package features the No. 9 graphics on the hood and doors, as well as a ghosted image on the interior door panels. For 2020, No. 6 honors the same car that went on to win Le Mans in 1969 with a different number. You can read more about the Ford GT Heritage Edition by visiting Media.Ford.com. The Ten Millionth Ford Mustang Was Just Produced in Michigan

Borgman is joining Ford in celebration this week, as the ten millionth Ford Mustang has just rolled off the Flat Rock assembly line here in Michigan! This particular vehicle is a 2019 Ford Mustang GT V8 convertible in Wimbledon White, boasting a whopping 460 horsepower. What makes this one special though, is that it pays tribute to VIN 001 – the first ever serialized 1964.5 Ford Mustang. The Ford Mustang has long been a favorite here in Grand Rapids and West Michigan, just as it has around the world for decades. The car has become something of a cultural icon, appearing in countless movies and bringing people together. This includes our friends at the West Michigan Mustang Club or the 50+ fans that visited Flat Rock to pay tribute and make the above photo possible. This recent article from the Official Ford Media Center tells more - see some excerpts below! Ford Celebrates Production of 10 Millionth Mustang Ford is celebrating the production of its 10 millionth Mustang – America’s best-selling sports car of the last 50 years and the world’s best-selling sports car three years straight. The 10 millionth Ford Mustang is a high-tech, 460 horsepower 2019 Wimbledon White GT V8 six-speed manual convertible equipped with the latest driver assist technology and built at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan. The first serialized Mustang (VIN 001) produced in 1964 was the same color and model with a three-speed automatic transmission and 164 horsepower V8. “Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world,” said Jim Farley, president of global markets, Ford Motor Company. “I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car – a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.” Ford is celebrating the milestone with employee celebrations at its Dearborn headquarters and its Flat Rock Assembly Plant, including flyovers from three WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter planes and Mustangs produced for more than five decades parading from Dearborn to Flat Rock, where the Mustang currently is manufactured. During its 54-year production history, Mustang also was built in San Jose, Calif., Metuchen, N.J., and the original Mustang production facility in Dearborn, Mich. Tow Smarter Through West Michigan in the 2019 Ford Ranger When the 2019 Ford Ranger pickup arrives at Borgman Ford in Grand Rapids this upcoming winter, there's one very handy feature you're going to want to check out. New Ford Ranger XLT and Lariat models will include the Blind Spot Information System, and you'll be able to adjust the "size" of your blind spot to include the length of your trailer! Whether you're a towing pro or just getting the hang of it, having this "extra set of eyes" so to speak can be a valuable thing while heading out to your favorite getaway for the weekend. Take a look at how the system works in this article from the Official Ford Media Center below: https://youtube.com/watch?v=NJ9_AME0Ng0 When the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger goes on sale later this year, customers will be able to get innovative towing technology not available in any other midsize pickup. Taking boats to the slip or ATVs to the dunes is easier with Ford Ranger’s class-exclusive Blind Spot Information System with trailer coverage. After hooking up a trailer, radar housed in Ranger’s taillights monitors blind spots all the way to the back of the trailer. The system keeps drivers informed of the presence of a vehicle in the truck’s blind spots until that vehicle passes. Ranger can store up to three trailer profiles, including a trailer’s length, to let the radar system know how far back to provide warnings when another vehicle is traveling next to the trailer. Ford & Vanderbilt University Study the Phantom Traffic Jam Phenomenon

Borgman Ford would like to wish everyone in West Michigan a fun, happy, and safe Fourth of July weekend. Though Independence Day isn't until Wednesday, US 131, I-96, and I-196 are sure to be packed this weekend with people flocking up north or to the lakeshore. If you've ever experienced a sudden stop on the expressway, and after crawling along for a while, discover there was no apparent reason for the slowdown, you've just witnessed a "Phantom Traffic Jam." Apart from being a nuisance, Phantom Traffic Jams cause headaches for logistics companies too, so Ford and Vanderbilt University teamed up to identify the causes and how to prevent them. The biggest reason was reactionary braking, and we already have the tech for that: Ford's Adaptive Cruise Control! Watch the video below and read some excerpts from the Official Ford Media Center to learn more. We Have The Tech: Ford, Vanderbilt Show We Don’t Have To Wait For Self-Driving Cars To Mitigate Phantom Traffic Jams Ford and Vanderbilt University researchers are demonstrating this week that so-called phantom traffic jams could be minimized with widespread use of adaptive cruise control available today in most Ford vehicles. The team conducted what is believed to be the largest, most realistic demonstration of its kind, showing that existing technology could help minimize phantom traffic jams, which happen for seemingly no reason and can cause hazardous traffic backups. On a closed Ford test track, 36 drivers simulated normal highway traffic using adaptive cruise control, which can automatically slow down and speed up to keep pace with the car in front without getting fatigued or distracted. Those drivers then drove the same course, but without the technology – meaning they had to manually brake and accelerate the vehicle. The results: vehicles using adaptive cruise control reduced the impact of a braking event more than those vehicles without the activated technology. Even with just one in three vehicles using adaptive cruise control, the test yielded similar traffic-busting benefits. “A fun Fourth of July family road trip can quickly become irritating when traffic slows to a crawl – especially once you learn there was no reason for the gridlock,” said Michael Kane, supervisor, Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology. “We encourage Ford owners who have adaptive cruise control to use it during their summer travels in the hope this smart technology today can be that first step to help ease commutes.” Ford currently offers adaptive cruise control on 71 percent of U.S. models. Ford Granted Their Best Score Ever in J.D. Initial Quality Study

Borgman Ford is happy to report that Ford Motor Company has ranked number 2 among all automakers the 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. This is the second year in a row Ford has earned this spot, with the Ford F-Series Super Duty, Ford Expedition, and the Ford Mustang all receiving top honors in their segments. Also of note, Ford has only improved their score over the last five years, making this year their best to date. Some of that is owed to the crowd-pleasing and easy-to-use Ford SYNC®3 system, which is now available in almost every New Ford vehicle in the lineup. This recent article published in the Official Ford Media Center tells more - here are some excerpts: Ford Motor Company Earns Its Best-Ever Score In 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, thanks to overall quality improvements that are outpacing the industry, especially in advanced audio, connectivity, entertainment and navigation technology. Now in its 32nd year, the J.D. Power study, which measures vehicle quality by analyzing the first 90 days of ownership, ranks Ford Motor Company No. 2 among all automakers. Ford’s scores are helped by substantial improvements in technology quality. Almost every Ford and Lincoln vehicle equipped with SYNC® 3 connectivity technology, leads its quality segments with significantly better than average quality scores. "Customers want a vehicle that keeps them connected whether they’re going places or just out enjoying a drive," said Jim VanSlambrouck, Ford's Director of Quality for The Americas. Borgman Ford has some exciting news for West Michigan Ford Truck fans, especially those who value performance and capability.

Since the arrival of the New Ford EcoSport earlier this year, many younger auto shoppers at Borgman have been pleasantly surprised by it. Not only does it have all of the features they're looking for in a vehicle such as Ford SYNC 3, FordPass, and four-wheel drive, but also that it's incredibly affordable. Ford has been watching this segment closely especially now that the oldest of Generation Z are seniors in college. In fact, subcompact SUVs like the Ford EcoSport have experienced meteoric growth among that age group in the last year over their compact car counterparts. This latest article in the Official Ford Media Center explains more about why this might be; below are some excerpts. It’s Not All About Millennials; Gen Z Drivers Help Make Subcompact Utility The Fastest-Growing Auto Segment The music is different and fashion senses change. But when it comes to driving, the young adults who make up Gen Z – people born after 1995 – share plenty with their parents and grandparents. They love SUVs. Gen Z makes up more than one-quarter of the U.S. population. Nearly one-third have reached driving age and are already having an impact on the auto industry. Despite their reputation for being a ride-share-loving generation, 92 percent own or plan to own a vehicle – according to a 2016 study by KBB/Autotrader. As to what type of vehicle today’s youngest drivers covet, many are already shifting away from once-popular subcompact cars and gravitating toward the still-young subcompact SUV segment. Just four years ago, 18- to 24-year-olds in the United States purchased 8,121 subcompact cars and only 443 subcompact SUVs. In 2017, that same age group purchased 3,981 subcompact cars and 2,840 subcompact SUVs – a 541 percent spike for subcompact SUVs. “I’d never heard of EcoSport, but I loved it the minute I saw it,” said Kelly Oswald, 19, one of the first EcoSport owners in the United States. “I went in looking to buy a used car. I didn’t expect there to be an affordable option to buy a new car.” You can read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.com. The 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor Arrives At Borgman Ford Later This Year

Borgman Ford has some exciting news for West Michigan Ford Truck fans, especially those who value performance and capability. The 2019 Ford Raptor arrives later this year, and it's chock full of upgrades like class-exclusive FOX™ 3.0 Internal Bypass shocks, a New Trail Control system and all-new Recaro sport seats. These feature alongside some new paint options and appearance tweaks too. What's particularly interesting about the shocks is this: they can adjust themselves while the vehicle is moving based on the terrain. For instance, if the truck is in mid-air, the system will stiffen them up to smooth out the landing, but relax them on super-bumpy roads. Also worth noting is the New Trail Control System, which behaves somewhat like cruise control for trails. It will automatically adjust the power and brakes for each wheel, so all you have to do is steer. A recent article in the Official Ford Media Center tells more; here are some excerpts: Upgraded F-150 Raptor Raises Bar Again In Ultimate Off-Road Performance with Smarter Shocks, New Trail Control https://youtube.com/watch?v=jhJaHuHLqNw Ford is making its iconic F-150 Raptor – the ultimate high-performance off-road pickup – even better with upgraded technology including class-exclusive, electronically controlled FOX™ shocks, new Trail Control™ and all-new Recaro sport seats. The upgrades are focused on key components that have made F-150 Raptor the benchmark in off-road trucks for an even tougher, smarter, more capable trail runner. "Raptor’s success is rooted in its incredible suspension, superb vehicle control and the confidence the truck instills in its owners," said Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance vehicle programs. "Upgrades to the 2019 F-150 Raptor have improved all three to new levels that the competition will have to benchmark – again." While Raptor has plenty of torque and horsepower, building a high-performance off-road truck isn’t just about engine power – it’s also about the suspension. Raptor’s suspension upgrades make it even more capable of clawing away at the terrain. To enhance Raptor’s already proven internal bypass shocks, Ford Performance worked directly with FOX to develop all-new electronically controlled Live Valve technology for the new platform that continuously adjusts damping in real-time. This class-exclusive setup uses sensors in the suspension and body to maximize comfort, handling and bottom-out resistance. “By automatically varying compression rates, Raptor can now make the most of its suspension travel of 13 inches at the front and 13.9 inches at the rear,” said Salenbauch. “The 2019 Raptor is not just more capable off-road. It’s smarter.” You can read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.com.
