Head-To-Head: 2026 Ford F-150 Lightning vs. 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV

There are many benefits to driving a modern pickup, especially if you live in West Michigan. You get a rugged chassis that can stand up to tough jobs, a spacious, open bed for hauling cargo, and powerful engines that can tow boats, campers, ATVs, or whatever else to your favorite Michigan hideaway. A fully electric pickup truck can do all of these things without skipping a beat, with the added benefit of ditching the gas pump for good. If you're shopping for a fully-electric pickup in Grand Rapids, the 2026 Ford F-150 Lightning and the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV are likely at the top of your list. Both have great value and capability, but a careful look into the details proves the Ford F-150 Lightning to be more versatile, human-friendly, tech-focused, and presents more overall utility. Join us in this Borgman Head-To-Head as we compare the two trucks based on several key factors! more Vehicle Range and Overall Efficiency We're all fairly well acquainted with shopping for a gasoline vehicle, but what makes one electric vehicle the smarter pick over the other? In short, look at each vehicle's power-to-weight ratios. This will give you an idea about how the vehicle handles, accelerates, and how far it can travel before needing a recharge. The Chevrolet Silverado EV utilizes a massive 205 kWh battery pack to achieve its 493 miles of EPA-estimated range. So, on paper, it appears to be more powerful in terms of raw battery capacity and peak driving range, but that's not the whole story. The Chevy Silverado EV has an astonishing curb weight of up to nearly 9,000 pounds, making it one of the least efficient electric vehicles ever built. That huge battery also means it can take anywhere from 10 to 18 hours to fully charge at home. The Ford F-150 Lightning weighs roughly 2,500 pounds less than the Silverado EV, and it utilizes its stored energy far more efficiently. It requires fewer kilowatt-hours to travel the same distance, resulting in lower residential electric bills. Furthermore, while the Silverado boasts faster peak DC fast-charging speeds, Ford drivers enjoy a massive infrastructure advantage. The Lightning features seamless access to both the BlueOval Charge Network and Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network, ensuring you will spend less time hunting for a compatible high-speed plug. The Lightning also charges in 8 to 13 hours on a home charger. The Ford F-150 Lightning offers two highly-optimized battery configurations: Standard-Range Battery: Yields up to 230 miles of EPA-estimated range. Extended-Range Battery: Increases range up to a robust 320 miles. Exterior Features and Overall Practicality Ford intentionally built the F-150 Lightning to look and work like an F-150. It retains the signature high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy body and standard 5.5-foot bed. This means that the thousands of aftermarket caps, tonneau covers, toolboxes, and racks already designed for the gas-powered F-150 will bolt directly onto the Lightning without issue. The Lightning also features Ford's pull-out tailgate bed step, which wins because it's simpler and easier to operate on uneven jobsites when compared to Chevy's multi-piece tailgates. The Chevrolet Silverado EV was designed to look and feel distinct from the gas-powered Silverado, and while they've done some interesting things visually, it comes at the cost of usability. The most egregious are the sail panels behind the cab that limit side access to the truck bed. It's an example of a form-over-function misstep if you're looking for a vehicle that can do it all. Truck Cab Interior Fit & Finish The Ford F-150 Lightning prioritizes comfort, ergonomics, and premium textures. Upper trims treat drivers to genuine leather upholstery, real wood accents, and Max Recline Seats that fold nearly flat for power-napping on breaks. For professionals, the Lightning features a console gear selector that folds flat at the push of a button, deploying an Interior Work Surface. This creates a completely flat desk over the center console, perfect for signing documents, holding a 15-inch laptop, or eating lunch out of the elements. It carries forward the "mobile office" design philosophy Ford has become known for in their truck cabs. By contrast, the Chevy Silverado EV features a roomier cab but falls short in other areas. There's certainly room in there to work or eat lunch, but Ford's attention to the little details is absent from this close competitor. Multiple automotive reviewers have also noted that for a truck priced like a luxury vehicle, the cabin materials feel less-than-premium, featuring extensive hard plastics and gloss-black surfaces that readily attract dust and fingerprints. Infotainment & Tech Features Ford preserves driver choice with the intuitive SYNC 4 infotainment system. Featuring a massive touchscreen, complete with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you can easily mirror your phone’s apps, ecosystem, and contacts the moment you start the truck. Chevrolet took a different approach and completely removed Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility from the Silverado EV. This forces drivers to rely solely on a Google-built-in system. Put simply, you will not be able to use your preferred smartphone interface or maps. Driver Assistance and Safety Features Both the Chevy Silverado EV and Ford F-150 Lightning offer robust driver-assist packages, including lane-keeping systems, automated emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. However, the F-150 Lightning also includes Ford Co-Pilot360 and available BlueCruise hands-free highway driving. What truly sets Ford apart is driver visibility. The Silverado EV has thick roof pillars, a high hood line, and distinct side mirrors that can warp or compromise blind-spot visibility. The F-150 Lightning retains the traditional F-Series scalloped front windows and large greenhouse design, giving the driver a commanding, uncompromised view of the road. Packages, Trims, and Payload Capacity The Silverado EV rollout has been somewhat delayed, and heavily favoring commercial fleet Work Trucks (WT) before making expensive retail models available to individual buyers. By contrast, Ford offers a highly structured, accessible trim offering that caters to every budget, whether for use in a commercial fleet or as a family vehicle: Pro: A rugged, no-nonsense commercial tool. XLT: The volume-selling sweet spot balancing tech and value. Flash: A tech-forward trim combining the extended-range battery with premium options. Lariat & Platinum: Premium luxury tiers packed with high-end comfort features. Critically, the Lightning's lighter chassis rewards owners with a much higher maximum payload capacity of up to 2,235 pounds. The incredibly heavy Silverado EV maxes out its payload capacity at a much lower 1,400 to 1,500 pounds, meaning the Ford can actually haul significantly more cargo in its bed. Features Exclusive to the Ford F-150 Lightning Here's where the Ford F-150 Lightning’s superior engineering is on clear display. Ford has created a vehicle that's much more than a tool for getting you and your stuff from point A to B - it can become a key piece of your lifestyle. Here are two features that best demonstrate what we mean: 1. The Mega Power Frunk (with a Built-In Cooler) While the Silverado EV features a standard front trunk, the Lightning’s Mega Power Frunk opens all the way down to the bumper grille level. This creates a low liftover height, so you don't have to hoist heavy items over a high truck nose. It boasts 400 liters of lockable space, four 120-volt power outlets, and dual USB ports. Best of all, the floor features a removable drain plug. You can dump multiple bags of loose ice straight into the frunk to create a massive, built-in party cooler for tailgating, camping, or fishing. When you're done, just pull the plug to let the melted ice drain safely onto the ground. Ford Mega Power Frunk Features: 400 Liters of Space 4x 120V Outlets + 2x USBs Low Grille-Level Liftover Removable Floor Drain Plug 2. Intelligent Backup Power (True Home Generator Mode) Both trucks feature exportable power outlets in the bed to run tools. However, the F-150 Lightning elevates this with Ford Intelligent Backup Power. When paired with the available Ford Charge Station Pro and a home integration kit, the Ford transitions into a fully automated home generator. If a severe storm knocks out your neighborhood grid, the F-150 Lightning will automatically sense the power loss and seamlessly reverse the flow of electricity to power your entire house. With an extended-range battery, the Lightning can keep an average home running for up to three days, or up to ten days if rationing power. Quick Recap: Comparison of Features Feature Ford F-150 Lightning Chevrolet Silverado EV Max Payload Up to 2,235 lbs Up to 1,400 lbs Curb Weight ~6,000–6,500 lbs ~8,500–9,000 lbs Smartphone Tech Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto None (Google Built-In Only) Frunk Design Low liftover, drain plug/cooler High liftover hood, no drain Home Integration Automated Home Backup Power Expensive, complex hardware bundle Aftermarket Fit Fits standard 5.5-ft bed gear Requires proprietary EV shapes Find Your Next Ford F-150 Lightning EV at Borgman Ford in Grand Rapids, MI Want to see some of these features for yourself? Ford and McDonald's Team Up to Make Sustainable Plastic with Coffee Beans

Borgman Ford in West Michigan proudly stands with Ford on their quest towards a more sustainable future and reducing their carbon footprint. Being headquartered in Michigan themselves, we applaud their efforts for being good stewards of our environment and actively finding ways to help keep Michigan beautiful for generations to come. Most recently, Ford joined forces with McDonald's to produce a bio-plastic for vehicle parts made from coffee beans, making up important parts like headlight housings. When we think of eco-friendlier vehicles, our attention tends to shift toward the vehicle's fuel economy and emissions. While Ford has made great strides in those areas and it's certainly an important piece of the puzzle, Ford also makes it clear that the materials and processes that go into producing a vehicle are equally important. In this latest article from the Official Ford Media Center, you can read more about this new coffee-based plastic, how McDonald's is making it possible, and watch a fun video. Check it out below! Double Shot Of Sustainability: Ford And Mcdonald’s Collaborate To Convert Coffee Bean Skin Into Car Parts Ford Motor Company and McDonald’s USA will soon be giving vehicles a caffeine boost by using part of a familiar staple in the morning routine, coffee beans, in vehicle parts such as headlamp housing. Every year, millions of pounds of coffee chaff – the dried skin of the bean – naturally comes off during the roasting process. Together, Ford and McDonald’s can provide an innovative new home to a significant portion of that material. The companies found that chaff can be converted into a durable material to reinforce certain vehicle parts. By heating the chaff to high temperatures under low oxygen, mixing it with plastic and other additives and turning it into pellets, the material can be formed into various shapes. The chaff composite meets the quality specifications for parts like headlamp housings and other interior and under hood components. The resulting components will be about 20 percent lighter and require up to 25 percent less energy during the molding process. Heat properties of the chaff component are significantly better than the currently used material, according to Ford. This is the first time Ford has used coffee bean skins to convert into select vehicle parts. “McDonald’s commitment to innovation was impressive to us and matched our own forward-thinking vision and action for sustainability,” said Debbie Mielewski, Ford senior technical leader, sustainability and emerging materials research team. “This has been a priority for Ford for over 20 years, and this is an example of jump starting the closed-loop economy, where different industries work together and exchange materials that otherwise would be side or waste products.” You can read the full story by visiting Media.Ford.com. Crumpled clear plastic water bottles with blue caps, symbolizing recycling and environmental awareness

Is your Vehicle Made of Recycled Bottles? If It's a Ford, Yes!

Recycling has become part of the American culture, but did you know that recycling has also become part of your Ford vehicle? Ford Motor Company released numbers earlier this month that revealed that they use about 250 plastic bottles per vehicle—totaling around 1.2 billion recycled plastic bottles per year—as their way to step toward sustainable products that don’t sacrifice performance. Chances are, the bottles will be found in your underbody shield to encourage aerodynamic driving and reduced cabin noise. Borgman Ford is proud to distribute vehicles from a brand that is a leader in environmentally friendly improvements! From Bottle to Underbody Ford design engineer Thomas Sweder explains that not only do water bottles contribute to a more sustainably made vehicle, but it also increases performance by reducing the weight of the vehicle. “The underbody shield is a large part, and for a part that big, if we use solid plastic, it would likely weigh three times as much,” he said. “We look for the most durable and highest performing materials to work with to make our parts, and in this case, we are also creating many environmental benefits.” Wondering how it works? From your recycling bin at home to the commercial recycling facility, then shredded into small pieces that is packaged as bulk and sold to suppliers. Those suppliers turn it into a fiber through high temperatures and extrusion. The complicated part combines those fibers with other types of fibers, applies a textile process that creates a sheet of material—this sheet is then molded into the automotive parts that Ford uses. The environmental impact is exciting for Ford—by using a material that undergoes this recycling process, Ford is helping to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans or landfills. If the material meets desired specifications for rusticity, performance, and durability, why wouldn’t every company use it? “Ford is among the leaders when it comes to using recycled materials such as this, and we do it because it makes sense technically and economically as much as it does for the environment,” Sweder said. Watch the video below from Ford for the inside story! Check with us at Borgman Ford to request a tour of your future recycled underbody shield. We can point to the exact part that is recycled! Remember to contact us with any inquiries or to set up an appointment to discuss the best addition to your family: an eco-friendly, high-performing Ford. Ford Announces Partnership With Electric Vehicle Company Rivian and Invests $500 Million

Borgman Ford in Grand Rapids applauds Ford for their continued efforts in electric vehicle research. Over the last 5 years or so, electric vehicles have been gaining some traction as barriers like cost and charging time start to come down. At the same time their biggest hurdle, range, has been nearing or even exceeding that of similarly-sized gasoline-powered vehicles. Ford has been looking for opportunities to expand its electric vehicle portfolio for some time, with popular vehicles such as the Ford F-150 getting EV options in the near future. To supplement their efforts, Ford has also recently invested $500 million in the electric vehicle company Rivian. Through this strategic partnership, Ford and Rivian will team-up to create an all-new electric Ford Vehicle using Rivian's proven skateboard platform, and we're excited to see what they do. Rivian Announces $500 Million Investment From Ford; Partnership To Deliver All-New Ford Battery Electric Vehicle A recent article from the Official Ford Media Center tells more about Rivian and provides some insight as to what both can achieve and learn from each other. Here are some highlights: Rivian today announced an equity investment of $500 million from Ford Motor Company. In addition to the investment, the companies have agreed to work together to develop an all-new, next-generation battery electric vehicle for Ford's growing EV portfolio using Rivian's skateboard platform. "This strategic partnership marks another key milestone in our drive to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility," said RJ Scaringe, Rivian founder and CEO. "Ford has a long-standing commitment to sustainability, with Bill Ford being one of the industry's earliest advocates, and we are excited to use our technology to get more electric vehicles on the road." "We are excited to invest in and partner with Rivian," said Bill Ford, Ford's executive chairman. "I have gotten to know and respect RJ, and we share a common goal to create a sustainable future for our industry through innovation." Rivian already has developed two clean-sheet vehicles with adventurers at the core of every design and engineering decision. The company's launch products - the five-passenger R1T pickup and seven-passenger R1S SUV - will deliver up to 400-plus miles of range and provide an unmatched combination of performance, off-road capability and utility, starting in late 2020. Ford Announces Switch to Michigan-Sourced Renewable Energy through DTE Collaboration

Borgman Ford is pleased to share that Ford and DTE Energy have teamed up in an effort to make Ford's operations even more sustainable. Through DTE's MIGreenPower program, Ford is on-track to switch the Flat Rock Assembly Plant and other Ford facilities to 100% Michigan-sourced renewable energy by January 2021. Ford has been making investments in renewables for some time, with solar panels already in use at a number of their facilities and significantly reducing their water usage company-wide. This latest energy decision will add wind turbines to the list, with Ford being the first automaker to announce they're taking advantage of DTE's new program. Borgman Ford applauds Ford's commitment to sustainability, as these efforts drastically reduce pollutants and help preserve West Michigan's and our Great Lakes' natural beauty for generations to come. Ford Motor Company To Procure Locally Sourced Michigan Wind Energy Through Collaboration With DTE Energy A recent article from the Official Ford Media Center tells more about the new collaboration between Ford and DTE Energy, and we've included some excerpts below: Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Truck Plant, home of the Ford F-150 and Ford Raptor, Michigan Assembly Plant, home of the new 2019 Ford Ranger, and several new buildings on the Ford Research and Engineering Campus and Corktown campus, including Michigan Central Station, will soon be powered by 100 percent locally sourced renewable energy. This is in addition to the 500-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel system already in place at Michigan Assembly. This collaboration is part of a commitment by Ford to a substantial renewable energy procurement through DTE Energy's MIGreenPower program, supporting the company's Southeast Michigan portfolio and providing 500,000 megawatt hours of locally sourced Michigan wind energy. "Ford supports the implementation of renewable energy where the project can be tied to the customer's facility, either directly or through the local distribution utility, and we believe that supports local jobs, improves the local environment and adds resiliency to the local grid," said George Andraos, Ford Global Director of Energy and Technology. "This project is a great investment for the State of Michigan and will have direct impact on our state." Ford Selects Grand Rapids, MI For City Of Tomorrow Challenge

Borgman Ford Urges Grand Rapids & West Michigan Residents to Share Thoughts on Transportation Borgman Ford has been serving the Grand Rapids and West Michigan community since 1960, and in that time we've had the unique pleasure of watching the city grow. In recent years, Grand Rapids has become a nationally-renowned destination for tourism, art, medicine, technology, and more. However, as more people flock here, the fastest-growing city in Michigan, issues with public transportation, traffic flow, parking, crosswalks, and other infrastructure have become more pronounced. The good news is, Ford is offering help. We're happy to share that Grand Rapids has been selected to participate in the Ford City of Tomorrow Challenge. This summer, Grand Rapids residents are encouraged to share their ideas in this crowdsourced, grassroots effort towards improving the transportation and infrastructure of their city. A combination of public voting and a panel of judges will determine the top idea or ideas and will award up to $100,000 to implement them in a pilot program. No one knows or loves this city more than its residents, and this is our opportunity to make a lasting impact on Grand Rapids for the better. Below, you can read more about the challenge with some excerpts from The Official Ford Media Center, or visit Challenges.CityOfTomorrow.com to join the discussion and share your ideas. Help Your City Develop Seamless Transportation – Ford And Grand Rapids Work Together To Create The City Of Tomorrow Ford Motor Company and Grand Rapids are working closely with public stakeholders as well as AT&T, Dell Technologies, Microsoft, PlanetM, and The Right Place to launch the Grand Rapids City of Tomorrow Challenge – a crowdsourcing platform for residents, businesses and community groups to propose and pilot solutions that improve mobility in Grand Rapids. As urban populations surge and new technologies emerge, the ways people move around cities are changing. In Grand Rapids, for example, the use of public transportation continues to drop and most families have two or more cars, according to American Public Transportation Association. With Grand Rapids experiencing the largest population increase in Michigan percentage-wise, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there is a need to alleviate congestion and reduce transportation wait times. Solutions to many mobility issues already exist in some form, but the City of Tomorrow Challenge creates a more inclusive process in which residents can express their ideas as they participate in working to ensure a future where people and businesses can thrive. By working with communities to crowdsource new mobility designs and innovations, and funding pilots to test the top solutions, the program’s goal is to help improve quality of life for Grand Rapids residents and visitors by providing dynamic mobility options that build on the existing transportation system. "As our city grows, we want to ensure we are working with our community to make getting around Grand Rapids easier," said Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. "We also want to strengthen confidence in our existing transportation systems. We have joined the City of Tomorrow Challenge because we believe Grand Rapids is a place where innovative ideas can improve mobility in our city." Throughout the eight-month program, those who live, work and play in Grand Rapids are invited to explore dynamic mobility options, including making the city’s streets more walkable and bike-friendly, extending the use of and the information that transportation systems provide, and enabling smart transportation choices. The Challenge includes a prize of up to $100,000 to fund pilots that test the top solutions in a real-world setting. "Grand Rapids is already on the forefront of transportation with our vision for mobility," said Josh Naramore, City’s Mobile GR-Parking Services manager. "With the City of Tomorrow Challenge, we can create a place that is a beacon of growth for years to come – a place where everyone can thrive." To continue reading, visit Media.Ford.com. How You Can Get Involved with the Future of Transportation in Grand Rapids, MI Grand Rapids, MI is and has long been a great place to live and raise a family, and Borgman is grateful for all that have chosen us for a New Ford Vehicle over the years. The First Ever Ford Plug-In Hybrid Police Car Arrives in Grand Rapids Next Summer

Borgman Ford Proud To Offer Eco-Friendly Options for West Michigan Public Safety Organizations Borgman Ford is proud to offer quality Ford Vehicles to drivers in West Michigan, and we pride ourselves on our selection of eco-friendly cars, SUVs, and Trucks. Saving money on fuel isn't the only benefit of choosing from the Ford EcoBoost, Hybrid, or Energi lineup; drivers also help keep West Michigan beautiful by reducing or eliminating emissions. Because public safety officials such as fire chiefs and detectives spend a considerable amount of their day driving around, Ford has added a New Plug-In Hybrid sedan to their municipal offerings. This gives organizations a way to cut down on fuel costs, and preserve the air quality of the communities they serve. This is a first-ever for Ford's public service lineup, and will be available for pre-order very soon! You can get more details via an article from the Official Ford Media Center below: Ford Launches Its First Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle For Police And Government Customers Earlier this year, Ford revealed the world’s first-ever pursuit-rated hybrid police vehicle. Today, the company is giving law enforcement an even more efficient option with the reveal of a plug-in hybrid vehicle capable of driving up to 21 miles without a drop of gas. The Special Service Plug-In Hybrid Sedan, the first plug-in hybrid police vehicle from Ford, is designed for police and fire chiefs, detectives, and other government personnel whose jobs don’t require a pursuit-rated vehicle. “This is the first Ford police vehicle that can potentially get through an entire shift using no gasoline whatsoever,” said Stephen Tyler, Ford police brand marketing manager. “Anyone can plug this in to any wall outlet to run gas- and emissions-free on battery-only operation.” The vehicle’s 3.3-kilowatt onboard charger allows agencies to fully charge the 7.6-kilowatt-hour battery in just 2.5 hours on a 240-volt, level-two charger. But Ford is confident most agencies won’t need anything more than a regular 120-volt wall outlet to recharge. The lithium-ion battery can move the vehicle up to 21 miles on a single charge and up to 85 mph on battery power alone. Once the battery runs down, the vehicle is powered by its gasoline-electric hybrid powerplant – with a range surpassing 500 miles – eliminating any concerns of range anxiety typically associated with battery-only electrics. Customers will be able to order the Special Service Plug-In Hybrid Sedan in December with sales starting next summer. You can read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.Com. How Ford Brought Eco-Friendly Foam into Over 18 Million Vehicles

West Michigan Drivers Reap Benefits of Renewable Research & Testing At Borgman Ford, we're always interested in the latest news regarding new technology in the auto industry, especially when its focus is to improve the experience of West Michigan drivers. Over the years, Ford has been making a big push to minimize their impact on the environment, all the while making a better product for their customers. Some of this is done directly, through reducing their water usage and manufacturing waste, while other efforts are a bit more unconventional. For example, take the driver's seat in a Ford Vehicle. Years and years ago, using petroleum-based foam padding was the industry standard, and because oil was so cheap, there wasn't much of an incentive to research and develop an eco-friendly alternative. Also, when the seat was worn out or the vehicle was retired, all of those non-renewable materials end up where you'd expect - a junkyard or a landfill. Over the past 10 years, Ford has been developing and advocating for the use of renewable materials throughout their vehicles, with recycled soybean foam at the forefront. Since the first appearance of soybean-based foam in the seats of the 2008 Mustang, it’s been a key material used in the seat cushions, seat backs and headrests of every Ford vehicle built in North America. https://youtube.com/watch?v=A2b0ORpJUCs Renewable Materials Can & Do Replace Petroleum-Based Ones Making sure these new and renewable materials outperform their petroleum-based counterparts is another key part of the issue. People in West Michigan and the world over choose Ford because of the quality and reliability of their product, and if renewable but otherwise sub-par seating is a part of that product, they've been done a disservice. Just bringing the idea to market in the first place was a challenge. During the initial testing, none of the foams met the rigorous requirements of automotive seating. Early trials failed to meet durability standards for seat cushions, which need to rebound for the equivalent of 15 years. Apart from that, the early foams smelled absolutely terrible. Needless to say, a lot of work went into resolving these issues before bringing soybean-based foam to market. After the foam was reformulated to meet or exceed automotive standards, and that awful smell was removed, it was rolled out all over North America. Since that time, over 18.5 million vehicles have been produced with renewable soybean-based foam, preventing more than 228 million pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. You can read the full story about Ford's research into soybeans on Medium.com. Experience Ford's Renewable Foam Seating at Borgman Ford in Grand Rapids If you're curious about what the soybean-based foam feels like, we invite you to stop by the Borgman Ford showroom and take any of our New Ford Vehicles out for a test drive! Our friendly staff will be happy to help you and answer any questions you may have about the 2018 Ford Lineup.
