Ford & 3M Rapidly Begin Production of Powered Respirators to Protect Healthcare Workers
Borgman is proud to represent Ford, who has recently teamed up with 3M to develop much-needed powered respirators to protect healthcare workers. In response to the COVID-19 epidemic, the medical field in the United States has found itself in a shortage of protective equipment for workers, especially in Michigan. This type of equipment, called a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator, consists of a full covering for the head and shoulders that is airtight. A battery-powered HEPA air purifier supplies air for the hood, protecting first-responders and medical staff in COVID-Only wings of hospitals. Ford and 3M developed a prototype for this powered respirator and brought it to production inside of 40 days. This was thanks in part to the nearly 90 paid volunteers from the UAW at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant right here in Michigan. Borgman salutes Ford's continuing efforts in the global fight against the novel coronavirus, including their recent partnership with GE to make ventilators, another item in short supply during the outbreak. To read more about the new powered air-purifying respirators they're building with 3M, check out some excerpts below from a recent article published in the Official Ford Media Center. Ford And 3M Now Shipping Powered Air-Purifying Respirators To Health Care Workers The first Ford-built powered air-purifying respirators, developed in close collaboration with 3M, are on their way to help protect health care workers fighting COVID-19. Since late March, Ford has been working with 3M to create urgently needed PAPRs, using design guidance from 3M and off-the-shelf parts, like vehicle ventilator fans and power tool batteries. In a separate effort, 500,000 reusable medical gowns distributed by Ford will soon be on their way to the state of New Jersey. “Ford could not stand by while health care workers in this country placed their lives on the line to help others without even having proper protection,” said Jim Baumbick, vice president, Ford Enterprise Product Line Management. “That’s why we kicked off an all-out sprint to protect those who are so selflessly helping patients afflicted with this terrible virus.” The PAPR includes a hood and face shield to cover health care professionals’ heads and shoulders, while a high-efficiency (HEPA) filter system provides a supply of filtered air for as long as 8 hours. The air blower system – similar to the fan in the Ford F-150’s ventilated seats – is powered by a rechargeable, portable battery, helping keep the respirator in constant use by first-line defenders. “We are dedicated to helping support and protect the health care workers fighting COVID-19,” said Bernard Cicut, vice president, 3M Personal Safety Division. “We thank Ford for partnering with us to quickly develop and deliver more of these critical health care supplies to the heroes working on the frontlines of this unprecedented health crisis.” To read the full story, visit Media.Ford.com. Ford & GE Team-Up To Mass-Produce Ventilators for Coronavirus Patients
Borgman Ford is proud to stand beside Ford, who in a time of crisis is again stepping up to the plate to do their part. In a new partnership with General Electric, Ford will be mass-producing ventilators to help patients with severe COVID-19 symptoms recover. Ford also has the support of the United Auto Workers Union and expects to produce 50,000 ventilators in Michigan within 100 days. Production is expected to start at their Rawsonville Plant on April 20th, and once fully ramped up, Ford expects to be producing 30,000 ventilators a month. An article published in the Official Ford Media Center tells more - read some excerpts below or visit Media.Ford.com for the full story. Ford To Produce 50,000 Ventilators In Michigan In Next 100 Days; Partnering With Ge Healthcare Will Help Coronavirus Patients Ford Motor Company, in collaboration with GE Healthcare, announced today it will begin producing in Michigan a third-party ventilator with the goal to produce 50,000 of the vitally needed units within 100 days and up to 30,000 a month thereafter as needed. Ford will provide its manufacturing capabilities to quickly scale production, and GE Healthcare will provide its clinical expertise and will license the current ventilator design from Airon Corp. – a small, privately held company specializing in high-tech pneumatic life support products. GE Healthcare brought the Airon Corp. design to Ford’s attention as part of the companies’ efforts to scale production of ventilators quickly to help clinicians treat COVID-19 patients. “The Ford and GE Healthcare teams, working creatively and tirelessly, have found a way to produce this vitally needed ventilator quickly and in meaningful numbers,” said Jim Hackett, Ford’s president and CEO. “By producing this ventilator in Michigan, in strong partnership with the UAW, we can help health care workers save lives, and that’s our No. 1 priority.” Ford expects to produce 1,500 by the end of April, 12,000 by the end of May and 50,000 by July 4 – helping the U.S. government meet its goal of producing 100,000 ventilators in 100 days. Ford, along with the companies it is supporting, will provide additional updates as these special projects progress. Read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.com. Borgman Congratulates Winner of Grand Rapids, MI City Of Tomorrow Challenge
Earlier this year, Borgman Ford announced that Grand Rapids Michigan was selected for the Ford City of Tomorrow Challenge. Today we're pleased to share the winner of the challenge: Kaizen Health. In the challenge, members of the community were asked to share ideas about how to solve mobility problems within the city. Entrants gave written proposals which were reviewed by other participants and a panel of expert judges, and the winner would be awarded a $100,000 prize to fund a pilot program. Kaizen Health identified that many people in underserved communities cite transportation as a barrier to their medical care. Doctor visits and trips to the pharmacy can be difficult for the elderly, disabled, and other marginalized patient niches, so Kaizen Health recommended Grand Rapids adopt their patient-focused ridesharing program to remove these barriers and increase attendance. This not only solves the immediate problem of giving these patients better access to their care but nurtures their long-term health as well. The Kaizen Health's ride-sharing program has already been implemented by several hospitals in the Chicago area, and we're excited to see it implemented within our own community. Grand Rapids Announces Winner of City Of Tomorrow Challenge This latest article from the Official Ford Media tells more - check out some excerpts below: After working collaboratively with Ford Motor Company, AT&T, Dell Technologies and Microsoft, the City of Grand Rapids today announced the winning project in the Ford City of Tomorrow Challenge.TM The winning proposal will be awarded $100,000 to fund a pilot program that will test its implementation in a real-world setting. Kaizen Health, a proposal that aims to eliminate transportation as a barrier to good medical care, was chosen as the winning project in the City of Tomorrow Challenge - a crowdsourcing platform created to help prepare cities for the future by bringing groups of people together to design and pilot new solutions that help improve mobility in cities. Kaizen Health is an early stage health technology company working to modernize and streamline access to transportation in partnership with providers, payers, self-insured employers and municipalities. The team is passionate about pursuing creative ways to deploy its technology and vehicle network to reduce unnecessary costs in health care and help people live healthier, happier lives. In Grand Rapids, the group has proposed a pilot that integrates existing services from Lyft, GO!Bus, The Rapid call center and Innova EV's first- and last-mile vehicles to allow Grand Rapids residents to make independent decisions about their mobility options. "This proposal stems directly from the experiences of Grand Rapids residents and the obstacles they face on a daily basis," said John Kwant, vice president of Ford City Solutions. "Listening to the community, collaborating with residents and bringing them into the design process is a new and novel approach to developing mobility solutions, and it's exactly the kind of local engagement we wanted to foster with the City of Tomorrow Challenge." The Bright Future of Transportation in Grand Rapids, MI Keep reading on Media.Ford.com. Ford Commissions Rebel Nell to Create Jewelry From Michigan Station Graffiti
Borgman Ford in Grand Rapids, MI is very eager to see what Ford's plans are for the historic Michigan Station in Corktown, Detroit. After the last train left the station in 1988, the station was ultimately abandoned and became something of a canvas for local graffiti artists to hone their craft. After Ford acquired the building, much of this artwork has cracked and fallen to the floors of the lobby and hallways, or otherwise become degraded. Ford enlisted the help of local women's' organization Rebel Nell to collect some of this fallen artwork and transform the fragments into beautiful, unique, and meaningful pieces of jewelry. Rebel Nell hires women who face barriers to employment in Detroit, and educates them on financial management, life wellness and entrepreneurship. You can read more about the project in Corktown and Rebel Nell in these excerpts from the Official Ford Media Center, or by visiting the links below. From Graffiti Art To Jewelry: Corktown Firm Rebel Nell Turns Pieces Of Michigan Central Station Into Unique Wearables For years, the walls, columns and archways inside Detroit’s abandoned Michigan Central Station served as a canvas for inspired graffiti artists and muralists. That fascinating chapter of the iconic building’s history isn’t about to be lost as Ford transforms the structure into an innovation hub to help it realize its vision for the future of transportation. Ford commissioned Rebel Nell, a Corktown social enterprise, to repurpose layers of graffiti paint from inside the massive building into one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. The result is the limited edition Michigan Central Station Collection, an assortment of pendants and earrings, each individually created from fallen graffiti. “There is a story in every piece,” says Shawn H. Wilson, manager, community engagement at Ford Fund. “Over the years Michigan Central Station became an artist’s playground. Artists went there to perfect their craft and build their brands. Part of the reason we’re doing this is to pay homage to the artists.” Ford worked with Rebel Nell to gather fallen graffiti from the lobby and other floors of the 500,000-square-foot building, which closed in 1988 and has remained vacant since. Wilson and Rebel Nell co-founder and CEO Amy Peterson said they were respectful of the artists’ works and only gathered graffiti that had fallen from surfaces. “Graffiti is truly art,” Wilson says. “Rebel Nell was able to help us identify artistic components inside the train station and which graffiti to use.” You can read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.com, or stop by RebelNell.com to see their products and learn more about their mission. Ford Selects Grand Rapids, MI For City Of Tomorrow Challenge
Borgman Ford Urges Grand Rapids & West Michigan Residents to Share Thoughts on Transportation Borgman Ford has been serving the Grand Rapids and West Michigan community since 1960, and in that time we've had the unique pleasure of watching the city grow. In recent years, Grand Rapids has become a nationally-renowned destination for tourism, art, medicine, technology, and more. However, as more people flock here, the fastest-growing city in Michigan, issues with public transportation, traffic flow, parking, crosswalks, and other infrastructure have become more pronounced. The good news is, Ford is offering help. We're happy to share that Grand Rapids has been selected to participate in the Ford City of Tomorrow Challenge. This summer, Grand Rapids residents are encouraged to share their ideas in this crowdsourced, grassroots effort towards improving the transportation and infrastructure of their city. A combination of public voting and a panel of judges will determine the top idea or ideas and will award up to $100,000 to implement them in a pilot program. No one knows or loves this city more than its residents, and this is our opportunity to make a lasting impact on Grand Rapids for the better. Below, you can read more about the challenge with some excerpts from The Official Ford Media Center, or visit Challenges.CityOfTomorrow.com to join the discussion and share your ideas. Help Your City Develop Seamless Transportation – Ford And Grand Rapids Work Together To Create The City Of Tomorrow Ford Motor Company and Grand Rapids are working closely with public stakeholders as well as AT&T, Dell Technologies, Microsoft, PlanetM, and The Right Place to launch the Grand Rapids City of Tomorrow Challenge – a crowdsourcing platform for residents, businesses and community groups to propose and pilot solutions that improve mobility in Grand Rapids. As urban populations surge and new technologies emerge, the ways people move around cities are changing. In Grand Rapids, for example, the use of public transportation continues to drop and most families have two or more cars, according to American Public Transportation Association. With Grand Rapids experiencing the largest population increase in Michigan percentage-wise, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there is a need to alleviate congestion and reduce transportation wait times. Solutions to many mobility issues already exist in some form, but the City of Tomorrow Challenge creates a more inclusive process in which residents can express their ideas as they participate in working to ensure a future where people and businesses can thrive. By working with communities to crowdsource new mobility designs and innovations, and funding pilots to test the top solutions, the program’s goal is to help improve quality of life for Grand Rapids residents and visitors by providing dynamic mobility options that build on the existing transportation system. "As our city grows, we want to ensure we are working with our community to make getting around Grand Rapids easier," said Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. "We also want to strengthen confidence in our existing transportation systems. We have joined the City of Tomorrow Challenge because we believe Grand Rapids is a place where innovative ideas can improve mobility in our city." Throughout the eight-month program, those who live, work and play in Grand Rapids are invited to explore dynamic mobility options, including making the city’s streets more walkable and bike-friendly, extending the use of and the information that transportation systems provide, and enabling smart transportation choices. The Challenge includes a prize of up to $100,000 to fund pilots that test the top solutions in a real-world setting. "Grand Rapids is already on the forefront of transportation with our vision for mobility," said Josh Naramore, City’s Mobile GR-Parking Services manager. "With the City of Tomorrow Challenge, we can create a place that is a beacon of growth for years to come – a place where everyone can thrive." To continue reading, visit Media.Ford.com.
